Nano Brows Healing Stages: What to Expect Week by Week

Getting nano hairstrokes is the easy part. The healing process is where most questions — and most anxiety — come in.
The most common message we receive in the weeks after a nano brows appointment is some version of: "My brows look nothing like they did on the day — is this normal?"
Almost always, yes. The nano brows healing process is predictable, but it's not linear — and if you don't know what to expect, the changes can feel alarming. This guide walks through every stage so you know exactly what's happening and when to relax.
Why Nano Brows Look Different as They Heal
Nano hairstrokes sit in the upper layers of the skin. As your skin heals, it forms a thin layer of new skin over the treated area — temporarily muting the colour and making the strokes look less defined or even invisible. This is completely normal and is not a sign that anything has gone wrong.
The pigment hasn't gone anywhere. It's simply sitting beneath fresh, healing skin — and it will resurface as that skin fully settles, usually by weeks 6–8.
Nano Brows Healing: Week by Week
Immediately After Treatment (Day 0)
Your brows will look noticeably darker and more defined than the final healed result. The strokes are sharp, the colour is vivid, and the shape may look slightly stronger than you expected. Some mild redness around the brow area is normal.
This is not your final result. The colour will soften significantly as healing progresses.
What to do: follow the aftercare instructions provided, keep the brow area dry, and resist the urge to judge the result at this stage.
Days 1–3: Bold and Dark
The brows still look defined and darker than they will once healed. Some clients experience mild tenderness or sensitivity around the treated area — this is normal and typically resolves within a day or two. Very slight swelling around the brow area can occur but usually subsides quickly.
What to do: keep brows dry and clean. No makeup on the brow area. Avoid touching or rubbing. Sleep on a clean pillowcase.
Days 4–7: Flaking Begins
The skin begins to flake and peel as the healing process progresses. This is the stage that worries clients most — but it's a healthy and necessary part of healing.
The flaking skin may look like the pigment is coming away with it. It isn't — the colour you see flaking off is the surface layer of skin, not the pigment underneath. Do not pick, scratch or rub the flaking skin. Removing it prematurely can pull pigment out of the skin and create patchy results.
What to do: let flaking happen naturally. Gently pat (don't rub) the area dry after washing your face. No peeling, picking or scratching.
Weeks 2–4: The Ghosting Phase
This is the stage that catches most clients off guard. The brows may look very light, patchy, or almost invisible — as if the treatment has barely worked at all.
This is called the ghosting phase, and it is completely normal.
What's happening: the new skin that has formed over the treated area is temporarily masking the pigment underneath. The colour appears to have gone, but it hasn't — it's simply beneath a fresh layer of skin that hasn't fully settled yet.
What not to do: do not panic, do not contact your artist to say the treatment hasn't worked, and absolutely do not book a top-up elsewhere. This phase resolves on its own.
What to do: wait. Keep the area moisturised with the recommended aftercare product. Trust the process.
Weeks 4–6: Colour Resurfaces
The ghosting phase begins to resolve. Colour starts to reappear and the strokes become more visible again as the skin fully settles. The brows will look softer and more natural than they did immediately after treatment — which is exactly the goal.
At this stage you'll start to get a sense of your true healed result, though the process isn't quite complete yet.
What to do: continue avoiding retinol, AHAs and exfoliating skincare near the brow area. Start thinking about the shape and density you'd like to refine at your touch-up.
Week 6–8: Healed Result and Perfecting Touch-Up
By weeks 6–8, your nano brows are fully healed. The colour has settled, the strokes are defined, and you can see the true result of the treatment.
This is also when your perfecting touch-up is booked. The touch-up is not an optional extra — it's the second half of the two-step nano brows process. At this appointment, Anna will:
Fill any gaps where pigment hasn't retained as expected
Refine the shape based on how the brows have healed
Adjust density or pigment tone if needed
Add any additional strokes to complete the result
No two clients heal identically, and the touch-up is where the result is properly finished. Clients who skip the touch-up often end up with a less complete, less long-lasting result.

Nano Brows Aftercare: The Rules That Matter Most
First 10–14 days:
Keep brows completely dry — no swimming, saunas, steam rooms or intense exercise
No makeup on or near the brow area
Do not pick, scratch or rub flaking skin
Sleep on a clean pillowcase
Avoid direct sun exposure on the brow area
Apply aftercare balm as instructed — lightly, not heavily
Long-term (to protect longevity):
Apply SPF to the brow area daily once fully healed
Avoid retinol, AHAs, BHAs and exfoliating acids near the brows
Limit time in chlorinated pools and saunas
Book your colour boost before the pigment fades completely
When Should You Be Concerned?
The healing process described above is normal for the vast majority of clients. However, contact your artist if you experience:
Significant swelling or redness that worsens after day 3 (rather than improving)
Signs of infection — warmth, increasing pain, discharge or fever
An allergic reaction — significant itching, hives or rash
Mild itching during the flaking phase is normal. Significant, spreading itchiness is not — contact your artist or GP if this occurs.
How Is Nano Brows Healing Different from Microblading Healing?
The healing stages are broadly similar — both go through an initial bold phase, flaking, ghosting, and colour resurfacing. The main differences:
Nano brows tend to cause slightly less surface trauma, so the flaking phase is often milder
Nano pigment can ghost more dramatically during weeks 2–4, which surprises some clients expecting a gentler process
The healed result from nano is often crisper and more defined than microblading, because the machine deposits pigment more precisely

Frequently Asked Questions
My brows have completely disappeared at week 3 — is this normal? Yes. This is the ghosting phase. The pigment is beneath fresh healing skin and will resurface by weeks 5–6. It is very rarely a sign that something has gone wrong.
Can I wear makeup to cover my brows during healing? Not on the brow area itself for the first 10–14 days. You can wear makeup elsewhere on the face as normal.
The flaking looks like the pigment is falling off — should I be worried? No. What you're seeing is the surface layer of skin flaking away, not the pigment. The pigment sits deeper in the skin and stays put. Do not pick at the flaking — let it come away naturally.
My brows healed unevenly — what should I do? Wait until the touch-up appointment at weeks 6–8. Uneven healing is very common and is exactly what the touch-up is designed to correct. Do not attempt to fix uneven healing before this appointment.
I missed my touch-up appointment — can I still book one? Yes — contact the studio to rebook. The touch-up is most effective at 6–8 weeks but can still be carried out later. The later it's left, the more the healed result will have settled without refinement.
